We Finished!

Today we finished our project. I think it turned out really well! We made a powerpoint describing our process and final wayfinding system to present to the class tomorrow. Now all we have to do is make sure we know what we're talking about before we get up in front of the group tomorrow.

Public Speaking= Yikes!

At least I'll have my team up there with me.

New Wayfinding Photographs

This was a cigarette butt found in a ashtray within 20 feet of the building.

This woman outside of the Art and Design building was blatantly disregarding the signs we posted. When I talked to her she seemed interested in our project and she seemed willing to follow the directional signs once they've been put up.
This cigarette butt was placed on the ground right out side of the doorway. They were all over the steps outside of the building. It seems as though even though no receptacle has been placed within the policy boundary (where people are unfortunately smoking), people don't bother  to find one.

RESISTANCE

Someone ripped off our sign stating the new University smoking policy! This is our first sign of resistance... We might need to reevaluate our plan because signs are obviously not going to work on their own.

New and Improved Maps for Wayfinding

This Map shows the areas which people are allowed to smoke in according to University By-laws.

This map shows the actual areas around the art and design building that people are able to smoke based on fencing and boundaries.

This is a map of the pathway that you can take from room 316 of the art and design building to get to the designated smoking zone. The blue star is the smoking zone and the red star is the starting point in room 316.

I think that these maps are a lot better than the original map. It's less blurry and clearer for our purpose as well. I like the color coding that we came up with.

Art and Design Building Map/ Non-Smoking Zones

This is a map of the area around the art and design building. (It's a little blurry... Which is something our group will have to remedy before our final presentation.) The red area around the building is the non-smoking zone. This leaves very few areas around the building for people to smoke. This was the inspiration behind our project.

Have we found our way yet??

This is an example of one of our marked smoking zones.
This is an example of a smoking sign around campus. It now states that you must be 20 feet away from any part of the building to smoke.

These are pictures of our group preliminarily marking the smoking zones around the art and design building. We just marked them with chalk this time, but we will have to find a better method that is more noticeable for the final wayfinding system.

Possible Signage

These are some possible signs that Joe made for our project. We then revised them as a group and simplified them to make one that is just an arrow to put up multiple times. These are our preliminary signs and we can hopefully come up with some more traditional and untraditional signage during the next week to add.

Snowpocolypse 2011

Basically, our group decided to help freshman smokers in the design building get to a smoking area that follows university policy (which states you must be 20 feet away from every part of the building to smoke). This type of wayfinding system would be beneficial to the entire KU population. The non smokers will be able to stay away from potentially harmful second hand smoke both outside and through windows or vents. The smokers will also be able to avoid fines. This is a very relevant issue because it deals with the safety of the people around campus. If it was not important, I do not think there would be a policy written in the by-laws about it.

Our group met outside of class last night, despite the snow storm, and we actually got a lot done! We made an outline of what we want to present during our final presentation and a list of things we still need to do. James also had a really great interview with the director of HR at the University. She seemed very interested in our project and wants to know what we come up with. We also worked on possible signs and brainstormed on how to revise our plan due to the snow. The snow could possibly create new challenges for us... We had planned to mark our smoking zones on the ground, but now we ma have to look at other possible options. We discussed lighting and other types of signs that could help. Even using a sense of smell, like following the smell of cigarette smoke, is an option we could look at.
