I (Heart) Design

New year, new classes! For our first assignment in Visc 201, we have to pick a piece of design that inspires us in some way. At first I had a difficult time deciding on a piece of design that really moves me, then I remembered a new piece of architectural design that May showed us last semester in BDS 102.

This is called the High Line, and it's a new park in New York City. It is a park made from old railroad tracks that were raised above the city starting in the 1920s and 30s to make the streets safer. It was abandoned in the 1980's. Recently, they have transformed this old structure into an awesome and modern park. I love the architecture and design of the High Line. They even incorporated pieces of the old railroad tracks into the new design. I think that the rebirth of this structure into something new and exciting is very inspirational. If more design took this approach, the world would be a much more beautiful and exciting place. The High Line proves that things that are no longer useful or beautiful or beneficial should not be discredited, but should be seen as an interesting design challenge and an opportunity to help the world around us.
